Founded by Harry Batt Sr., Pontchartrain Beach became one of New Orleans’ best-known lakefront attractions. Located near the site of the old Milneburg resort, the park opened around 1930 and grew into a full midway by the end of the decade. Generations of visitors came for rides such as the Zephyr and the Wild Maus, and later for the Bali Ha’i Restaurant. Pontchartrain Beach Amusement Park closed in 1983, but it remains a fond memory for many New Orleanians.
Souvenirs from this much-loved amusement park can still be found today. A couple of examples are shown here.
This tin sign appears to date from around the 1930s. I believe it is authentic, although I can’t say for certain. I have heard or read that the design was never widely used—possibly because the clown was just a little too scary!
