Opened in 1938 by owner James LaRocca, Jim’s Place was originally located at 3839 S. Carrollton Avenue and later moved to 3100 S. Carrollton. The original Jim’s closed in 1979. Over the years, it became a well-known neighborhood restaurant.
Jim’s has enjoyed local fame on two levels. First, it lives in the nostalgia of the old dining venues remembered by longtime residents of the city. Second, there is the china. Given the memories of older New Orleanians and the seemingly sheer scarcity of the chinaware, it is highly sought after by collectors.
We were lucky to find this marked cup from Jim’s Place. Knowing that finding a matching saucer was unlikely, we paired it with a plain white saucer for display. The cup was manufactured by Sterling China and distributed by G. A. Lotz, New Orleans. It probably dates from the 1940s–1950s.
